Customers of online services have come to expect automation in all of their transactions. They are upset if they have to do more than is necessarry and will move on to the next better solution if given the oppurtunity. Third-party gateways are not set up by default to do recurring billing. We will discuss the repercussions of the solutions that are available in Recurring Billing. However, the default mode is that an invoice is provided to the customer each month. On that invoice is a link that will take the customer to one of the processor's html pages, where each month they will have to enter in their personal information. This gives your customers the ability to reconsider their purchase every month. This causes higher than necessary turnover and lower retention rates. If they fail to pay, you lose your customer.
The other problem with this arrangement is that your customers will also get this ability to rechoose when you do finally decide to get a better account. This issue will be fully described under Customer Control, but in this context, you want to minimize the ability of your customer to leave you. If you decide to get a third-party account initially due to promises of low initial monthly payments, be aware that you are giving your customer an escape hatch when you ask them to move to your new processor.
